Charge port checklist: diagnose, buy, test
A "won't charge" ticket is one of the most common jobs on the bench, and one of the easiest to get wrong: plenty of ports don't need replacing at all, and a cheap flex that fails a week later costs you a second visit. Here's a supplier-neutral routine from diagnosis to handoff.
- Rule out debris and the cable first. Look inside the port with a light and magnification. Pocket lint packed at the back is a very common cause of loose or intermittent charging. Clean it out gently with a non-conductive pick, then retest with a known-good cable and charger before you order anything.
- Check for liquid damage. Corrosion on the port pins or a tripped liquid indicator changes the job. A new flex won't fix a board-side fault, so tell the customer before you quote a simple port swap.
- Match the exact model and flex. Charge port flexes are model-specific, and on many phones the same flex also carries the bottom microphone and other connections. Some listings are sold by color to match the frame. Check the exact model, color and what the listing says the flex includes.
- Inspect the flex on arrival. Look for bent or missing connector pins, a torn or creased ribbon, and a port that isn't square to the flex. Photograph the part and the label as it arrived.
- Dry-fit and test before you close up. Connect the new flex and power on before sealing. Confirm it charges from a wall charger, check data or sync to a computer, record a voice memo and make a test call to check the microphones, and wiggle the cable gently to catch an intermittent connection.
- Document for an RMA. If anything fails, stop, film the problem with the order number visible, keep the packaging, and contact the supplier inside its return window. Each supplier's rules differ, so check its current policy page.
Premium vs aftermarket flexes
Suppliers sell the same charge port flex at different grades, and grade names like “Premium” or “Aftermarket” are each supplier's own labels, not an industry standard. The price gap below is real and current; whether the cheaper grade holds up is exactly what supplier reviews are for.
